Music Magazine Analysis 3

This certain phrase acts as a sell line as it encourages the target audience to buy the magazine and entices them. ‘Murderer’ instantly catches the readers’ eye and makes them want to know which rock star this is. By making this certain word red, it holds connotations of death and blood which could be associated with the article. This certain phrase suggests this magazine is quite edgy which again highlights the older aimed target audience.

The layout of this magazine is effective as it informs the reader of the targeted readership. It does this by the composition being fairly jumbled which would be hard for a younger audience to follow. The main image covers some letters on the page of the magazine which emphasises that the magazine is aiming to make the band well known again and raise awareness that they have returned. Sell lines are placed over the main image which suggests that the magazine is also aiming to sell the stories inside the magazine and make the sound exclusive.
The mode of address of this magazine is direct and fairly informal. The text on this magazine is mostly chatty but informative. Phrases such as ‘It’s the comeback story of a lifetime’ makes this magazine appear personal and as though they are being told this information directly.

Music Magazine Analysis 2

‘World Exclusive’ acts a sell line which boosts the magazine’s status as the audience believe that they are being let into private and un-leaked information. The use of colour makes it stand out more on the white and black so that the reader is immediately attracted to the slogan. This sell line also targets the audience as they are attracted to this ‘exclusive’ magazine.

This slogan attracts fans as they would instantly be interested to hear the comeback story of the band. The image that goes alongside of the slogan backs up this given information as their facial expressions emphasise this ‘story’ is interesting and makes the story seem more exciting.
The continuous use of red makes this entire information eye catching to the audience as it stands out on the white and black. This information is furthermore conveyed as exclusive as it is ‘the story of a lifetime’.
The slogan also backs up the image as it proves that in the time the band were apart, they haven’t changed and are still as they were before. This interests the reader as they want to know what happened in the time they were a broken band.

The free giveaway in this magazine helps to emphasise the target audience. The audience is portrayed through the giveaway by what the item is. A 17-page collection would be more appealing to an older person that it would a young. This suggests that the target audience of this magazine would be aimed at older teens- young adults. Ranging between 17-25. The target audience is also suggested by the giveaway being based on Fleetwood Mac, this is a band better known by an older audience which makes the magazine appear of a civilised nature. I believe this magazine is aimed at both male and females as it has more male associated bands on the front but also includes ‘the original sugababes’ which highlights a potential female interest.

Analysis-Music Magazines

Masthead can be slightly covered as it is well known and established.

The masthead is also clear and bold suggesting this magazine is slightly more sophisticated and aimed at a more matured audience.
The colours in the masthead instantly suggest the possible genres of music associated with this magazine. The colours used are associated with more rock bands and this impression is given through the masthead.
The puff ‘world’s greatest magazine’ makes the magazine appear more enticing and encouraging to buy.
Image is a mid-shot of Kings of Leon, body language and facial expressions appear friendly due to smiles and eye contact. Eye contact makes the magazine more personal and believable. Look as though they are having fun so makes magazine seem exciting.
Target audience of the magazine is made obvious due to this band being the main image on the front, promotes the magazine to fans of this music genre. The casual body language and dress code make the magazine more relatable and normal.

Music Magazine Analysis- The Strokes 2

This slogan acts as a sell line as it offers something which appears exclusive. ‘The final chapter’ promotes to the audience a story that hasn’t been told and an insight to the bands professional story. The use of the word ‘chapter’ makes the slogan seem effective as it presents the bands journey as a story and makes it known that this chapter has a new story to be told.

This puff on the magazine promotes the main article in the magazine about the band as it makes the article more appealing and interesting. This puff suggests to the audience that they are being let in on the whole story and not just the stuff that wants to be published. But also, all of the bad things that have happened along the way as well as the good.

This piece of text given acts as a promotion as it gives the magazines verdict and encourages the reader to foresee what this verdict is. The use of yellow makes it stand out on the front cover as it is placed on dull colours such as blacks and greys. ‘AM’ is promoted again in this which makes the audience more aware of its importance on the front cover.
The house style that features on this magazine front cover if fluent throughout the page. Dull colours are used which makes the white text stand out even more and target the audiences’ eye. This dull use of colour also emphasises the main subject of this article and that it is the ‘last chapter’ for The Strokes. The colour within the image makes the magazine more appealing as it brightens up the page and targets the older audience through the use of browns and nude colours. The page consists of fairly simple and bold fonts which are made instantly more appealing as they stand out on the dull background and make a bold statement. The masthead is used in the same font as what also features on the page which makes the magazine more original but the involvement of red makes it more appealing and stand out.

Analysis- Music Magazines

Masthead is clear and bold so that it stands out and proves that the magazine is well know as it is making a bold statement.

The colour red is instantly attracting and is one of the first things noticed on the page. This makes the masthead one of the most noticeable things on the page, this makes sure the reader will remember the name.

The main image of the magazine is of the strokes. Their facial expressions and body language appear serious suggesting that the article about them inside the magazine is something of a serious nature. This may attract and market its chosen audience as they will want to know what this article is about and why the image is so serious. All of the band members are looking directly at the camera which makes the magazine experience more personal for the reader. Each of the band members are casually attired which makes the magazine more relatable and seem as though they are just like ordinary people. It also highlights that whatever has happened to the strokes, it has not affected them.

The audience of this magazine is made somewhat obvious due to this main image as they are young males themselves. The band appear classy and well into fashion which could suggest the target audience of older teens as teenagers are into fashion and begin to realise what looks good as they develop into an older teenager.

PROBLEM PAGE MOCK DESIGN

AS MEDIA STUDIES: PRELIMINARY PROJECT

PROBLEM PAGES ANALYSIS- MONDAY 9TH SEPT. 2013

STYLE FEATURES

·         All 3 of the problem pages contain feminine colours which suggest that each of the magazines target towards females. These colours consist of pinks, blues and oranges which are considered more relatable to a female audience.

·         All of the images within the problem pages also relate to a female audience due to them all being rather of females, or someone/something a female can relate to. For example, a female role such as motherhood or a male which is associated with a woman.

·         Each of the problem pages are set into columns which make the article appear more professional but at the same time, informative. This also makes the problem page more structured and easier to follow for the chosen audience.

CONVENTIONS

·         Each of the pages also include celebrity endorsement or news which makes the pages immediately more appealing for the target audience. It also makes them feel more comforted as they believe they may be in a similar situation to a celebrity who they idolise or take interest in.

·         Each of the problem pages contain rhetorical questions which appear chatty and informal. These are effective as they make the article seem less worrying and crammed with information. These questions also make the article more personal to each reader as it seems like they are having an individual conversation with the producer of the magazine or a specific expert.

·         The target audience of these problem pages are aimed towards females. Possibly of an age range between 30-50. This is obvious due to particular articles included which seem suitable towards a female between these age ranges. Suited towards a typical woman between these ages with a job and family as these articles would take to their interest due to advice given and tips.

Planning the name/slogan

When figuring out a name for my problem page, I wanted something that would relate to the topic/genre of my page and something that was catchy and appealing to the chosen target audience. I decided on ‘Smile Again.org’ as I believe this related well to the theme of my problem page and is immediately obvious what the problem page will be about. This name also delivers an element of reassurance as it reminds the reader of the possible happiness they may receive after reading the problem page and that it does a good job in advising people. It is also a reminder that the troubled relationship they are in can be fixed. I also wanted it to be simple and to the point so that it would be remembered by the readers and therefore become well known. I done this by making it snappy and short and not adding any images that would make it complicated. When creating my slogan, I wanted to create something that would be reassuring for the reader and something that is enticing. I came up with ‘Stuck in a relationship that’s full of arguments? We’re here to help.’ I believe this slogan is simple but reassures the reader that there is help at the other end of the tunnel. It also notifies the reader that if they are in that position, they should seek help as it would eventually result in unhappiness. I chose this name and slogan as I also believe they relate to each other, the name reminds the reader of what could potentially happen and where they should be, and the slogan guides them to how this will happen and what they have to do.

Planning the design features:

I chose to use the colours pink, purple and blue as I believe that they relate to the target audience really well and emphasise who the chosen audience is. Pink and purple are both feminine colours which highlight the problem page is for the female readership base. These two uses of colour also attract the target audience straight aware and are made aware that this page if for them. I also chose to add in elements of blue as it presents the secondary audience of males. Blue is a colour that is more associated with males so this touch of blue in the page emphasises the possible mixed sex readability.  I chose the name of the problem page and slogan to have the dominant fonts as I wanted them to stand out more so that a wider readership is gained. I also believe that this was important to make these the dominant fonts as they instantly inform the reader what they will be reading about before even beginning to read the articles. I chose the titles, slogans and headlines to have the most dominant fonts so that the articles attract readers. I chose the house style of feminine colours, female related images and swirly fonts as they emphasise the target audience and make the problem page feel more personal for reader. I chose swirly fonts in particular as it acts as a reminder of the main topic by it being sensitive and free.

Planning: Target Audience

I chose the target audience of females. This audience will be aimed specifically at the ages 14-22, I chose the age range in particular as I researched that relationships impact females of these ages the most. It stated that the large minority of people over the age of 22 are generally settled with ‘the one’. This age group and gender are my primary target audience as I believe that these group people would benefit the most out of a relationship help problem page, whereas someone of a younger or older age would find this problem page less beneficial. My problem page would be aimed at females who seek relationship advice and need extra guidance in a difficult situation they find themselves in. My secondary audience would be males who need help and are sensitive people. I chose this as I believe sensitive males would benefit in reading professional advice. I believe my primary audience of females would be the typical girly girl and helpless romantics. This suits the problem page well as the professional advice would appeal to them and is a good way of informing people who seek help in the relationship department.
A LEVEL MEDIA STUDIES
Problem page planning:
·        A problem page based on relationship problems
·        Target audience: more females who seek relationship advice, advice will be more of a male nature
·        Secondary audience: Males
·        Teenagers between the ages 14-22. I chose this audience as this age range usually faces the most relationship problems before they settle down
·        House style: pinks and purples which represents the chosen target audience and relates to the females as these colours are associated with them, pastel blues which represent freshness and starting over- positivity
·        Fonts occasionally swirly which again symbolise the chosen target audience and make the problem page more appealing
·        Fonts in some of the articles to remain plain and simple so that the page is fun but yet informative and serious, font will also appear slightly reassuring
·        Personalities of the chosen target audience: helpless romantics, people who look to others for assistance and guidance, typical girly girls
·        Name of the problem page: smileagain.org
·        Article ideas: Is it all getting too much? Need a break?- professional advice with some statistics

·        How to smile again and get back to that happy relationship
SCREEN GRAB 3

These certain news flashes act as sell lines as they offer things that seem exclusive and make the magazine seem unique. Also that only this magazine offers it.
The choice of image also refers to the chosen target audience as a male plays a fairly big role in a woman’s life. The headline ‘ask Dr Christian’ seems relatable as women in marriages seek advice from their husbands. This further implies that the chosen target audience for this problem page is a traditional, married, middle aged woman.
The use of celebrity endorsement interests the reader as they feel as though they may be going through a similar situation as a celebrity they have looked up to or previously idolised. These extras make the reader want to read on and give themselves something to look forward to.
SCREEN GRAB 2

Rhetorical questions acts a chatty catch phrase which makes the article more personal for the reader as they feel as though they are involved in a personal conversation.
The image relates to the female target audience as the woman looks warming and welcoming. The woman’s pose instantly appears friendly due to her smile which further encourages the reader to continue on.
The certain use of colour further emphasises the chosen target audience, this colour is feminine and bright symbolising its more for a woman’s nature. These connote that the articles are most likely to best relate to a female.
Each of the articles are set into columns which makes the problem page appear professional despite it’s use of slang and chatty format.

AS MEDIA STUDIES-PRELIMINARY PROJECT

Masthead is presented in a simple font suggesting the article is easy reading and isn’t too intense. The colour also implies this article is aimed towards females as it is a feminine colour.
The use of further colour such as blue also indicates an element of relaxation. This could suggest that this article is an easy read and is there for relaxing purposes. This colour also stands out well with the pink and white making it immediately more enticing.
Slogans on the problem page make the magazine seem more unique as they can offer a storyline no one else does. These particular slogans appear as though they are exclusive and this article is the only place that offers this particular story. This makes the reader feel they are invited into a secret and therefore are encouraged to read the certain story.
The use of image relates to female roles and therefore makes the article more relatable to its chosen target audience. These particular choices of images make the article appear more personal towards the reader. This is effective as it makes the magazine more interesting for the reader and they can relate their current position to the article.
‘What does the future hold?’ acts as a sell line without being obvious. This phrase offers other articles to read on the page so that it appears the magazine is giving more to the added story.
